OUR FARM
Hopcott Premium Meats - Farm History
The Hopcott Farm was purchased in 1932 by Fred & Jane (Cowie) Hopcott who were born and raised in Ladner, BC . The land had never been farmed and was covered with small trees. For 25 years it was a dairy farm. The dairy barn which was built in 1934 still stands on the farm today.
In 1957 the dairy herd was sold and Fred Hopcott's real dream of raising beef cattle was started. At first the beef cattle were fed on pasture but over time buildings were constructed to house the beef and land was used for growing corn silage. The cattle were sold to local packing plants in Vancouver.
In 1971 the partnership known as Meadows Feedlot was started at this time. Over the years thousands of beef cattle were fed for the local market.
Fred's son Bob Hopcott became an active partner in the farm following his father's love of beef cattle .
Gradually over the years the local packers all disappeared with the last major one quitting in 1997. Although we still continued to feed beef cattle it became necessary to find markets in Washington State and Alberta.
It became apparent at this time that some sort of diversification was necessary to keep the farm viable. Over a cup of coffee with a neighboring farmer, I was told that Ocean Spray Cranberries was looking for acres to plant. So in 1996 we started converting some of the farm from corn land to cranberry bogs, finishing the 70 acres conversion in 2000.
Around this time we started hearing about farms in the Eastern United States doing corn mazes. An agri-tourism event with designs cut out in corn fields. With our children growing up and the population increasing around us Bob & his wife Debbie decided to again diversify into agri-tourism. In 1999 Bob & Debbie attended a seminar in Wisconsin on marketing and designing corn mazes and in 2000 opened the now well known Meadows Maze. We have since added many related attractions such as hay wagon rides, pony rides, maze train and barrel train rides, petting zoo, Meadows Mountain w/40ft. tube slide, bee observatory, corn cannons, party rooms and fire pits.
Although the cranberries and the corn maze have been very successful Bob's first love still remained the beef cattle. It became apparent though that depending on markets hundreds of miles away was risky. We became members of NADFMA (North American Direct Farm Marketing Assoc.) This organization specializes in marketing farm products direct to the consumer. With people being increasingly aware of food quality and the importance of buying locally, we opened Hopcott Premium Meats.
Our 6,000sq.ft. building is built with barn style post and beam construction held together by wooden pegs just the way old farm barns were constructed. Our aim is to make your visit to Hopcott Premium Meats an experience.
We will be offering farm fresh beef grown right on our farm. It will be handled the old way with the carcasses being aged 21-28 days in our cooler and then presented in a 54' long fresh meat counter. We will be offering beef that has NO added growth hormones or anti-biotics. Our main supplier will be Big Smokey Ranch in Lumby, BC.
Hopcott Premium Meats is a family run business with our son-in-law Lance running the meat shop. Our daughter's Jennifer and Audrey will also be part of Hopcott Premium Meats. Our two sons Travis and Bradley are also actively involved in the farm operation. At Hopcott Premium Meats, our family's desire is to build a business where quality and trust is the priority.
